13-minute marathon PR and a Boston qualifier

13-minute marathon PR and a Boston qualifier

— Yolanda

Situation

Long-distance runner training high mileage, wanted to know if her form and shoes were helping or hurting her marathon goal.

Findings

The analysis showed where her mechanics were costing her, and that her shoe setup didn’t match how she ran. She got specific shoe and exercise recommendations built around her gait.

Outcome

A 13-minute marathon PR, a Boston qualifying time, and 1st in her age group. In her words, the recommendations also left her the strongest she’s ever been.

Yolanda came to me training high mileage for a marathon. She wasn’t injured. She wanted to know if her form and her shoes were actually helping her hit her goal, or working against her.

The video showed a few specific spots in her mechanics that were costing her efficiency, something I see fairly often in marathoners logging high mileage. Her shoe setup didn’t match how she actually ran either. I gave her targeted exercise work for the mechanics and a shoe recommendation built around her gait.

She took the changes into her training block and then into the race. The result was a 13-minute marathon PR, a Boston qualifying time, and 1st in her age group. She told me afterward that the strength work also left her the strongest she’s ever been.
